The Society publishes three periodicals and has both an on-line and travelling bookshop that can be booked for conferences and other events. We stock the most extensive range of publications specifically to serve the interests of art and design teachers, many of which are unavailable elsewhere in the United Kingdom. If you have any queries about books, subscriptions to periodicals or other matters please e-mail

AD Magazine

AD is the NSEAD members' magazine, which brings together the former A'n'D and START magazines. It is mailed to all NSEAD members and former START subscribers. Visit the archive and read past copies here (log in first if you are a member of subscriber)

You can subscribe to AD magazine here or buy individual copies here.

Contributions are welcome from all phases of education. Guidance on writing primary articles is available here.

NSEAD Bookshop

This area of this web site contains details of nearly 200 specialist publications on art and design education that can be purchased here on-line. Many of these are unavailable elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

You can use the search facility to help you find references to your chosen keywords within the publications database, or browse the list of titles or authors.

START Magazine

START was an exciting and stimulating magazine for teachers of pre-school and primary art, craft and design published between 2003 and 2010 when it was replaced by AD Magazine. START was full of ideas and resources intended to support classroom practice - it was therefore decided to archive all back copies on this website. They are accessible to all NSEAD members and AD Magazine subscribers.

Goodwill Art

It’s not difficult to download art images on-line, but reliable educational material to help teachers to put them in context is less easy to come by. Goodwill Art’s well-proven resource is a labour-saving, easy-to-use teaching folder containing postcards, background notes and classroom activities. There are teacher's packs on scores of subjects — many of them cross-curricular.

International Journal of Art & Design Education

Prior to 2000 known as the Journal of Art & Design Education, iJADE provides an international forum for the dissemination of ideas, practical developments, and research findings in art and design education. The Journal is a primary source for independently refereed articles about art and design education at all levels.

The Journal reflects and welcomes a wide range of theoretical and practical approaches especially those that debate the social and cultural values which inform art and design education, offer illustrated case studies, analyse and exemplify specific art, craft and design practices in all sectors of education, and that critically engage with the past, present and future of art and design education.

Occasional Papers and Films

These pages list occasional papers and videos produced by or of interest to NSEAD members. Recent subjects range from advocacy and assessment in art and design to using Plaster of Paris safely.

Book Reviews

Drawing Projects for Children by Paula Briggs, review by Eileen Adams
The chunky (8’’x10’) Drawing Projects for Children is a beautiful book: 144 pages, printed on thick paper, with colour illustrations on nearly every page. Well done designers Freddy Williams and Vanessa Wong! It is robust both in content and presentation, a book that will be of use for a long time. More...

Creative License: From Leeds College of Art to Leeds Polytechnic, 1963-1973 by James Charnley; review by Ted Kennedy
'James Charnley writes in a clear style that avoids jargon and any attempt to over theorise or confuse the reader with esoteric language. He moves from a description of Leeds in the 1960s, drawing on valuable testimonies from ex-students and lecturers, to an overview of the development of art education in higher education.' More...
